DIY Christmas Cards

It’s not too late to mail a handmade greeting card!

You have time, just pull out those fat quarters you can’t seem to cut into.  These little artworks look like they took hours of time, but you’re going to work quickly in assembly line form and be done in an hour!

Here’s how we made the trees.  Gather your red, green or winter fat quarters and slice a 3/8 in –  1/2 in x 6 in strip, or use scraps that you’ve been collecting.  We have a few lace bits in the scrap jar, so they got added to the mix.  From card stock, cut a stack of triangle tree shapes for a base so they’ll all be a similar size.   Use your favorite glue or decoupage medium to paint a thin layer, then add your strips of fabric and lace.

Work on several at a time, using cut off ends from one strip on the next tree wherever  it will fit.  Overlap or let edges sit near each other – it’s all good!  When the tree is covered, trim using the tree-shaped base as a guide.  Or not – I like the rustic look just as well! If your glue cups the paper, just iron it flat – you can iron paper and fabric to get it to behave.

To finish,  glue or stitch your fabric tree to a blank card – ta-da!  Use a longer stitch to sew along the sides.  Add a trunk if you like – a little thread painting right on the card looks great!  You have the perfect, heart-felt, hand made quilty card! Your friends and family will love the creative thoughtfulness.  Look for our Fabric Palette fat quarter singles and bundles  at AC Moore, Meijers, and Hobby Lobby.  They are 100% cotton, 18 in x 21 in traditional, modern and novelty designs for all your projects.
